Strong foundations, secure water and a clear vision for Tasmania's future

The release of Tasmanian Irrigation's 2025/26 Annual Report highlights a year of strong operational performance, major project delivery and continued investment in Tasmania's long-term water security.

In the face of dry conditions across much of the State, Tasmanian Irrigation delivered
99,472 megalitres of high-surety irrigation water to more than 1,100 customers, while maintaining 100 per cent reliability of supply. Several schemes recorded all-time delivery records as farmers increasingly relied on secure water to support their businesses.

The year was also marked by significant progress on major infrastructure projects, including the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme, the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation and the Greater South East Irrigation Scheme. These projects are helping shape the next chapter of agricultural growth in Tasmania.

Chair Kate Vinot said the year's achievements demonstrated the growing importance of irrigation infrastructure in supporting Tasmania's economy and regional communities.

"This year reinforced the value of secure, reliable water and the confidence it provides to farmers, communities and investors across Tasmania. Our focus extends beyond delivering water today. We are investing in infrastructure that will support productive agriculture, regional employment and economic growth for generations to come.

"The progress achieved across our development pipeline positions Tasmania well to meet future challenges, including increasing climate variability and growing demand for water security."

Tasmanian Irrigation's operational network now includes more than $500 million in assets, including 22 dams and approximately 950 kilometres of pipeline, supporting more than 130,000 hectares of irrigable land across the State.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Sylvester said the organisation remained focused on delivering reliable services today while building the infrastructure Tasmania would need tomorrow.

"Our product is water, but the problem we solve is water security,” Mr Sylvester said.

“The strength of our existing schemes has given farmers confidence during a challenging season, with near-record water deliveries and exceptional reliability across the network.

"At the same time, we are delivering one of the largest infrastructure programs in the organisation's history. Projects such as Northern Midlands, Sassafras Wesley Vale and Greater South East will unlock new opportunities for agricultural production, investment and regional growth.

"As Tasmania's climate becomes increasingly variable, access to highly reliable water will be essential to maintaining a resilient and productive agricultural sector. Our role is to ensure that future generations have the water security they need to thrive."

The Annual Report also highlights continued investment in environmental stewardship, asset renewal, safety and workforce capability, alongside ongoing engagement with Aboriginal and regional communities as Tasmanian Irrigation plans and delivers infrastructure for the future. Together, these priorities reflect the organisation's commitment to responsible development and enduring value for customers, communities and the broader Tasmanian economy.
