Limited TI Water Available to Buy
Looking to Purchase Highly Reliable Irrigation Water?
Water entitlements are currently available for purchase on four operational irrigation schemes.
It’s a rare opportunity to buy water on an operational scheme: 15 of Tasmanian Irrigation’s 19 schemes are fully sold, with farmers utilising all available water to intensify, expand and diversify their agricultural businesses.
A project to sell remaining available water has resulted in 4,300 megalitres of water being contracted since early 2023, representing $3.67 million in sales.
Tasmanian Irrigation Corporate Services Manager Cody Townend said this reflects ongoing interest from irrigators who recognise the value of high-surety irrigation water to minimise risk and boost profitability.
“These entitlements offer a valuable opportunity for landowners seeking secure, long-term access to irrigation water to support agricultural expansion and business resilience,” Cody said.
“The water represents untapped potential for agricultural development, as each megalitre sold enables more land to be irrigated, lifting yields, diversifying crops and driving regional employment.”
Details of currently available water can be found here.
Ensuring the sale of all available water on schemes is one way Tasmanian Irrigation continues to support the State Government’s 2050 AgriVision target to increase Tasmania’s farmgate value to $10 billion a year through increased productivity, resilience and sustainable water access.
“Converting available entitlements into active irrigation supports Government objectives for regional economic expansion while improving Tasmanian Irrigation’s financial sustainability by reducing scheme associated debt and optimising infrastructure utilisation,” Cody said.
“Water entitlements enhance land value and marketability, attracting stronger investment in agricultural regions across Tasmania. By securing water now, landowners avoid future price escalation and ensure access before full allocation.”
Tasmanian Irrigation is offering flexible purchase and lease options to help landowners secure access to irrigation water. These options include outright purchase, deferred payment plans, short-term leasing and lease-to-buy arrangements that credit lease payments toward eventual ownership.
The initiative provides flexibility for farmers to align investment with their cash flow and operational needs while ensuring water is used productively across the State.
