Promoting Job Opportunities

Promoting Career Opportunities to Tasmanian Students

Tasmanian Irrigation is proud to open its workplaces to students to give them a first-hand look at irrigation and civil construction careers.

Students are able to interact directly with project managers, engineers, machinery operators, safety managers and other skilled professionals to learn how multi-million dollar projects – such as the Northern Midlands Irrigation Scheme (NMIS) and the Sassafras Wesley Vale Irrigation Scheme Augmentation (SWISA) – will create jobs and economic benefits for Tasmanian communities.

In collaboration with Beacon Foundation, students from Riverside High School and Cressy District High School recently toured construction works on the NMIS. As well as learning how irrigation water is stored, managed and delivered to farms across the region, students had the opportunity to meet some of the 150 people involved in building the scheme.

They learned about the wide range of job opportunities involved in delivering major infrastructure projects, from technical and trade roles through to engineering and project management.

Students reflected that “the people were easy to talk to, which makes it easy to get connected into the industry” and that it was “helpful to see how many different fields are used for one project”.

With construction nearing completion and the project on track for commissioning in October this year, the NMIS will soon be ready to deliver up to 25,500 megalitres of high‑surety irrigation water through more than 150 kilometres of pipeline.

Tasmanian Irrigation also recently hosted students from the Sassafras Primary School to learn about the SWISA project, which is being constructed across the road from their school.

The students enjoyed meeting the TI team and our contractors, learning about Tasmanian Irrigation’s role in supporting agricultural production and long‑term water security across Tasmanian regional communities.
