Are You Prepared for the Fire Season?
As we head into the fire season, it is important that we all take a moment to consider if we are prepared to prevent and manage bushfires.
If you live in a rural area, there are many things you can do, such as removing deadwood, conducting controlled burns, installing firebreaks and ensuring firefighting equipment is serviced and ready to go.
In cities and towns, you should ensure gutters are free from leaves and debris, flammable items are moved away from your home, and a reliable water supply is available.
A bushfire survival plan so that your family is on the same page in the event of a fire is essential. Make a plan to leave early on days that are forecast as catastrophic or are of high fire danger. Know what you need to pack, such as medications, mobile phone charger, insurance documents, passports and personal treasures. Also have a plan for pets and livestock.
In the event of a fire, stay informed by monitoring www.fire.tas.gov.au and www.bom.gov.au, listen to your local ABC radio station and make sure you have downloaded TasALERT for all emergency services alerts.
Another great app to download is emergencyplus, which can assist in pinpointing your exact location through the use of GPS and what3words. It also works offline so mobile reception is not needed to use it. The app helps you call the right emergency number anywhere in Australia, and is invaluable when you are camping, travelling or working in a remote area.
Landowners should also be aware of the Tasmanian Government’s Red Hot Tips program, which is a free one-stop service that educates, engages and supports farmers to actively manage bushfire risks. Red Hot Tips will visit farms to discuss fuel reduction options, provide practical advice on fire management planning and assist with fire permit applications. For more information, please contact www.sfmc.tas.gov.au/red-hot-tips/ or Program Coordinator Sam Tacey on 0417 153620 or sam.tacey@fire.tas.gov.au.
