Senior Safety Advisor

Full Time – Fixed Term (2 Years)

ABOUT US

Tasmanian Irrigation is a State-owned Company that develops, owns and operates irrigation schemes in Tasmania, in accordance with sound commercial practice. Our mission is to deliver water where and when it’s needed to support sustainable agricultural growth in Tasmania.

We own and operate 19 irrigation schemes across the state, and we have $1.3 billion of new irrigation projects in development. We deliver water to our customers at the lowest sustainable price, while responsibly and sustainably managing our water resources, scheme assets and the environment.

Tasmanian Irrigation has the capacity to deliver 156,000 megalitres of high surety water each year, irrigating more than 133,000 hectares of land. For every 1,000 megalitres of water delivered, there is up to $3 million in on-farm investment, up to $7 million in annual economic uplift, and up to 30 direct and indirect jobs created.

All schemes developed and operated by Tasmanian Irrigation are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, have strong community endorsement, are designed to last at least 100 years and deliver water at an average reliability of more than 95 per cent per annum.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Tasmanian Irrigation is seeking a highly experienced Senior Safety Advisor to join our team and maintain a strong, visible safety presence across our construction projects.

Reporting to the Safety Manager, this role partners with leaders, contractors and workers to identify risks, strengthen controls, and embed practical, sustainable safety behaviours across high-risk infrastructure activities.

This position adopts an influence-first approach—coaching leaders to build ownership of safety while confidently intervening when necessary to manage risk. The role also contributes valuable insights to the continuous improvement of safety systems, culture and strategy across the organisation.

The position is based in Launceston, with regular state-wide travel required to support project delivery.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

Key to this role will be an individual’s ability to:

  • Maintain a strong in-field presence, engaging with workers, contractors and leaders to support safe outcomes
  • Build trusted relationships that foster open communication, shared problem solving and accountability for safety
  • Strengthen pre-job planning, hazard identification and risk management practices
  • Provide practical, real-time safety guidance during high-risk activities
  • Support contractor management processes, including prequalification, onboarding and performance conversations
  • Coach leaders to build safety ownership, strengthen decision-making and reduce reliance on the safety function
  • Lead or contribute to investigations and learning reviews, focusing on system improvements rather than blame
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of safety systems, tools and governance processes
  • Provide expert advice on WHS legislation, standards and best practice

To be considered for this role, you must demonstrate substantial experience in safety roles within complex, high-risk operational or construction environments.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Proven experience improving safety culture and influencing behavioural outcomes
  • Strong coaching, facilitation and communication skills across diverse audiences
  • Practical understanding of critical risk management, safety in design and contemporary investigation methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to apply WHS legislation pragmatically in operational environments
  • Experience working with contractors in project-based environments
  • Data literacy and experience using systems such as Microsoft Office, SharePoint and safety management platforms (e.g. Myosh)
  • A current driver’s licence and willingness to travel regularly

Desirable:

  • Tertiary qualifications in health and safety, risk, human factors or a related discipline
  • Formal training in ICAM, Learning Teams or similar methodologies
  • Experience in water utilities, civil construction or asset-intensive industries
  • Lead Auditor (ISO 45001)

WHAT YOU’LL GET IN RETURN

You will have the opportunity to influence the organisation’s future growth which will make a visible impact right across Tasmania. You will be part of an organisation that will value you and support your future development, and you’ll be working in a positive and people-focused culture where psychological safety is seen as a building block to success.

Some of the benefits our people enjoy include:

  • Competitive remuneration package;
  • Gym membership discounts;
  • Private health corporate discounts;
  • Flexible working arrangements (will vary depending upon the role);
  • Health and Wellbeing Program;
  • Tailored personal and professional development opportunities; and
  • Employee Assistance Program access.
