ABOUT US

Tasmanian Irrigation is a State-owned Company that develops, owns and operates irrigation schemes in Tasmania, in accordance with sound commercial practice. Our mission is to deliver water where and when it’s needed to support sustainable agricultural growth in Tasmania.

We own and operate 19 irrigation schemes across the state, and we have $1.3 billion of new irrigation projects in development. We deliver water to our customers at the lowest sustainable price, while responsibly and sustainably managing our water resources, scheme assets and the environment.

Tasmanian Irrigation has the capacity to deliver 156,000 megalitres of high surety water each year, irrigating more than 133,000 hectares of land. For every 1,000 megalitres of water delivered, there is up to $3 million in on-farm investment, up to $7 million in annual economic uplift, and up to 30 direct and indirect jobs created.

All schemes developed and operated by Tasmanian Irrigation are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, have strong community endorsement, are designed to last at least 100 years and deliver water at an average reliability of more than 95 per cent per annum.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Tasmanian Irrigation is seeking an experienced and forward‑thinking Environmental Manager – Projects to lead the environmental strategy for some of Tasmania’s most significant water infrastructure developments. This senior leadership role is central to ensuring our projects are environmentally responsible, compliant, and aligned with TI’s long‑term sustainability objectives.

Based in Launceston or Hobart, you will guide a dedicated team of environmental specialists, oversee complex approvals processes, and embed robust environmental governance across all stages of project planning and delivery. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping how TI engages with regulators, First Nations communities, landowners and key stakeholders, ensuring our projects reflect best practice and deliver positive outcomes for Tasmania’s environment and communities.

In this role, you will lead environmental risk management, drive compliance assurance, and provide high‑level strategic advice to the Executive. You will also champion continuous improvement, strengthen organisational capability, and ensure environmental considerations are integrated seamlessly into project decision‑making and construction delivery.

This is an opportunity to influence major infrastructure projects that will support Tasmania’s agricultural future for generations. If you are a collaborative leader with deep expertise in environmental management and a passion for sustainable development, we’d love to hear from you.

  • Strong knowledge of Commonwealth and State environmental legislation, including demonstrated experience leading approvals processes such as EPBC Act referrals and associated technical studies.
  • A strategic and organised approach, with the ability to integrate environmental and safety considerations into project planning, design and construction delivery.
  • Experience in governance and compliance, including auditing programs, reporting to senior executives, and building environmental capability across project teams.

To be considered for this role, you will need to demonstrate substantial experience in a senior environmental management position, ideally within major infrastructure delivery such as irrigation schemes, water or wastewater projects, linear infrastructure, or other large‑scale industrial developments. The successful Environmental Manager – Projects will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Engineering or a related discipline
  • Extensive experience leading environmental approvals, compliance and risk management for complex infrastructure projects
  • Strong capability in engaging with regulators, government agencies, First Nations stakeholders and community representatives
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused approach with the ability to work autonomously while guiding a multidisciplinary team
  • As the Environmental Manager – Projects, you will work closely with the Program Development & Delivery team, project managers, technical specialists, construction partners and senior leaders to ensure environmental excellence is embedded across all stages of project planning and delivery.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work and live in Tasmania and contribute to the growth of the State’s agribusiness sector.

WHAT YOU’LL GET IN RETURN

You will have the opportunity to influence the organisation’s future growth which will make a visible impact right across Tasmania. You will be part of an organisation that will value you and support your future development, and you’ll be working in a positive and high-performance culture.
