Tasmanian Irrigation Pty Ltd is a State-owned Company that develops, owns and operates irrigation schemes in Tasmania, in accordance with sound commercial practice, to facilitate the expansion of agricultural production in the State.

Tasmanian Irrigation owns and operates 19 irrigation schemes across the state, along with additional inherited infrastructure. Tasmanian Irrigation’s promise to our irrigator customers is to “provide irrigators reliable and consistent water at the lowest sustainable price while responsibly and sustainably managing our water resources, scheme assets and the environment.”

The Company also oversees development of irrigation schemes, funded through a unique public / private partnership model.

Tasmanian Irrigation now oversees 26,000 individual infrastructure assets with a replacement value of approximately $500 million and has the capacity to deliver more than 151,000 megalitres of irrigation water each year.

All schemes developed and operated by Tasmanian Irrigation are economically viable, environmentally sustainable, have strong community endorsement, are designed to last at least 100 years and deliver water at an average reliability of more than 95 per cent per annum.

ABOUT THE ROLE

Tasmanian Irrigation (TI) is searching for an experienced and motivated Hydrologist to join our Environment, Health & Safety team.

The primary objective of this position is to provide expert hydrological advice, support within Tasmanian Irrigation managed schemes and projects on all aspects including; water licence compliance, water quantity data collection, analysis and reporting.

This position plays a crucial role in coordinating hydrological reports, managing flow data, and fostering positive relationships with stakeholders and regulatory bodies to optimise water flow efficiency and maintain compliance with Australian standards.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED TO SUCCEED

Key to this role will be an individual’s ability to:

  • Oversee the water license compliance across all TI managed schemes including cease to take requirements.
  • Provide oversight for the siting, design and installation of hydrometric equipment related to the construction or ongoing operation of TI irrigation schemes.
  • Scope, coordinate review and provide input and advice on hydrological and water flow reports commissioned by TI.
  • Ensure the maintenance of existing hydrometric equipment such as gauging stations and evaporation pans is undertaken in accordance with current Australian standards.
  • Undertake hydrometric field monitoring, investigation and data collection activities.
  • Manage and analyse flow data within Aquarius and develop rating curves.
  • Effectively oversee the daily flow rate requirements of schemes to ensure maximum efficiency and delivery.
  • Identify and recommend process and efficiency improvements to maximise the usage of water licence limits.
  • Complete water balances within priority waterways that TI delivers water.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with irrigators, land managers and the Department of Natural Resources and the Environment Tasmania (NRET).

To be considered for this role, you must demonstrate prior experience in a similar position preferably within the development or operation of irrigation schemes, wastewater or sewerage networks or other large-scale industrial installations.

The successful Hydrologist will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in hydrology, hydrography, water resources, engineering, or physical sciences relevant to the duties being undertaken.
  • Experience in undertaking hydrometric field monitoring, investigation, data collection and management.
  • Knowledge of surface water and groundwater management including data analysis and interpretation.
  • Excellent communication and report writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Hold a current driver’s license.
